EU Entry/Exit System Launches in November 2024

RIF Trust’s Reaction to the Arrival of EES

David Regueiro, our Chief Operating Officer, is no stranger to political developments in Europe. Born and raised in Spain, he’s our European Residency and Citizenship by Investment (RCBI) specialist. In this article, Regueiro offers a response to the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) announcement.

He points out that “the European Union has been promising EES for some time. Despite various delays, it finally looks like they’re going to roll it out before 2025.”

“This will add an extra layer of complexity to European travel. As this affects Third Country Nationals, as in non-EU citizens, there is a solution. And that solution is a European Residency or Citizenship by Investment to facilitate ease of access to the Schengen area.”

EU Entry/Exit System Countdown

Ylva Johansson is the EU Home Affairs Commissioner. She recently addressed the European Union Agency for the Operational Management of Large-Scale IT Systems in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (eu-LISA).  They have been working on EES for 6 years with the EU Entry/Exit system’s legal framework established 4 years prior to that.”

Johansson declared that “after intense dialogues with Member States, with you, with the different stakeholders – I have decided that the Entry/Exit System will enter into operations on the 10th of November.”

What are the consequences for travellers visiting Europe? Their biometrics will be measured, with fingerprints registered and photographs taken. These will be checked on each visit.

Instead of adding to the efficiency of European travel, this will slow things down. Analysts predict that you will have to wait twice as long in line.

Even more travel bureaucracy is on the way in spring 2024. Brace yourselves for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). This will see you pay a €7 visa waiver in advance of arrival to the bloc, not unlike the US Esta.

Again, experts expect this to add to travelling time. New processes take time to assimilate. As staff and travellers are liable to be confused, the only visitors enjoying a smooth visit to another country will be European citizens and residents.

Will you be affected by the launch of EES?
