Latvia is in northeastern Europe and occupies the centre point of the three Baltic states. Estonia lies to the north and Lithuania to the south. Annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940, it became a sovereign state once more in 1991.
A member of the UN since shortly after regaining its independence, Latvia joined NATO and the EU in 2004. The country created its own currency, the lats, to replace the Russian ruble. On the very first day of 2014, however, the euro became Latvia’s official currency.
There’s a stock exchange in the capital city of Riga. By 2005, foreign direct investment principally from fellow EU members amounted to roughly one-third of Latvia’s GDP. With a Latvia passport, you can enjoy visa-free access to 175 countries.
