The beauty of our Passport Index is that you can see how the passport you were born with rates alongside other travel documents. If it ranks lower than passports offered by other countries, Citizenship by Investment is a great leveller. One particularly popular travel document coveted by investors is the Malta passport, for example.

The Malta Passport’s Visa-Free Countries

With a Malta passport, you can travel to 175 countries without a visa. Let’s clarify that figure a little. 118 destinations are purely visa-free ones, including fellow Schengen zone member France and Italy, along with the United Kingdom.

You can pick up a visa on arrival in 32 countries, such as Egypt, Maldives, and Thailand. That leaves 25 destinations allowing an eVisa, like Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. All this means that there are a mere 23 countries which require you to request a visa in advance with a Maltese passport.

The Malta passport is the 7th most powerful passport in the world right now. That’s level with the Canada passport, available for Canada Start-Up Visa holders after a naturalization period of 5 years. Maltese Exceptional Investor Naturalization (MEIN) grants you citizenship within 18 months and the chance to then immediately apply for a Malta passport without having to settle in the country.

In Praise of MEIN

Mohamed Hegazy is our Maltese Citizenship by Investment expert. He reiterates that the fastest investment migration route to a second passport is to invest in a new citizenship. But you should consider the sort of citizenship and passport you’ll receive in return for your investment.

“Next time you look at the front cover of a Malta passport,” instructs Hegazy, “consider the words “Unjoni Ewropea”.” “That’s Maltese for the European Union which explains the strength of the Maltese passport, given its EU passport status.”

On the subject of language, English and Maltese are Malta’s official languages. This means that if you do choose to base yourself in this magical Mediterranean island group, you’ll acclimatize better without having a linguistic barrier to negotiate.”
