Ethiopia, officially known as the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, is a captivating country located in the Horn of Africa. With a population of over 114 million, it stands as the second-most populous nation on the African continent. Ethiopia is a land of natural contrasts, with its vast fertile West, jungles, and numerous rivers, and the world’s hottest settlement of Dallol in its north. The climate varies from tropical monsoon in the western highlands to arid in the eastern lowlands.
The Ethiopian culture is rich and diverse, greatly influenced by the 80 ethnic groups that inhabit the country. The official language is Amharic, but numerous other languages are spoken. Ethiopia’s culture is also reflected in its traditional music, dance, and vibrant festivals like Meskel and Timkat.
Economically, Ethiopia has been one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, with agriculture as its mainstay. It is the world’s 7th largest producer of coffee, and its other significant exports include oilseeds, pulses, and gold.
Ethiopia is also home to nine UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, and the Simien National Park. The country is known for its ancient history, being one of the oldest locations of human life known to scientists and is widely considered the region from which Homo sapiens first set out for the Middle East and beyond.
