Because of its strategic location south of Italy and north-west of Africa, Malta played an important role in the Second World War.
It was an Allied base and Malta received a George Cross award for its bravery. After WWII, there came a push for independence. Malta became part of the Commonwealth in 1964 and a republic 10 years later. In 2004, it joined the EU.
