About Nauru

Nauru, the world’s third-smallest country, is a tiny island nation located in Micronesia in the Central Pacific. With a population of just over 10,000 people, it boasts a unique blend of Micronesian, Western and other Pacific cultures, reflected in the local customs, music, and dance.

The island experiences a tropical climate with temperatures averaging around 30 degrees Celsius year-round. Rainfall is unpredictable, with the wettest period typically occurring between November and February. Despite its small size, Nauru is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, including several endemic species.

Nauru’s economy is heavily dependent on phosphate mining, which has led to serious environmental degradation. The country also relies on aid from Australia, Taiwan, and New Zealand. In recent years, Nauru has hosted an Australian offshore processing centre for asylum seekers, a controversial arrangement that has brought significant funds into the country.

Despite the challenges, Nauruans maintain a strong sense of community and tradition. The Nauruan language is widely spoken, and important events are marked with traditional music and dance. The Nauru passport, while not granting visa-free access to many countries, is a symbol of the nation’s enduring independence and resilience.
